weird symptoms - diagnosing colon cancer

#personal #health #christian

Colon cancer can look a lot like grief or fatigue, so I didn't recognize it for maybe 2 years. Lining up so well with my mom's passing and other stressful events isn't bad timing, though, because God's timing is always perfect.

it's just grief

I've had low energy for months, maybe even a year. I haven't had energy for cooking, programming, or even videogames, so I've fallen massively behind in all my hobbies. I've been really lame, I know. The time lines up perfectly with my mom's passing in September 2022, so I assumed it was part of grieving and would pass in time.

it's just a pulled muscle

About six months before the diagnosis, I felt the worst pain I've ever felt in my right side. It felt like a dagger in my liver, and I could not lift my arm over my head. I could barely sit up. Before the pain, I had been nonstop coughing every night for weeks, so constantly I couldn't have conversations. Google suggested it was a torn muscle, which constant coughing can cause, so that's what I went with as an explanation. After two or three weeks, the pain dropped to a manageable level, only hurting some days.

it's just stress

My health was in the background all 2023. The entire year, I made it my mission to fix my relationship with my dad. He never accepted me as "I came out wrong," so he cut me out of his life as much as possible. Mom's death softened him and I think he has been making small efforts to try to be my dad, so I took it as a chance to mend. It's hard to read someone's heart, though. He is stony and never opened up to me even a little over the course of a year of accompanying him to his therapy group, trying to arrange father-daughter time, and numerous chatty phone calls.

It was more than wanting a normal relationship with my dad, though. I felt like I was sharing the gospel. Whenever I would suggest he pray about his grief, he would give vaguities like "I have been having conversations with God" that thrilled me. My dad, who used to disparage me for believing the Bible is true, is having conversations with God! I felt like I could convince him to pray, convince him to read his Bible, convince him to take spiritual matters seriously. I felt like I could share part of his spiritual life, like a healthy father and daughter should. I prayed for hours at a time that this would happen.

This was led by passion, not the Spirit, though, so no matter how tactfully I would bring up spiritual matters, he turned more and more vague until finally he used God's name in vain to shut me up. I had told him group counseling is good if it works for him, but he will have a deeper recovery if he combines it with personal Bible reading. He told me God said group counseling is all he needs, especially since it is already held at a church. My passion led him to put words in God's mouth, and I immediately felt convicted and dropped my mission. It is a difficult thing for me to hear, but Jesus told His disciples not to waste time on those who reject the Word, after all. All we are to do is share the way then leave people in God's hands. No one changes hearts but God.

Also during this time, he was getting in wrecks or near-wrecks as often as he was getting in a car. Some of them were severe for the other drivers, so I took over as his Uber out of concern. He wasn't on drugs or anything, he is just the most anxious person on earth. I didn't help, though. He would scream and backseat drive so aggressively that I started having near-wrecks every time I drove him. It climaxed three months ago (what timing!) when Dad insisted on driving us to group therapy this time, and my husband came out and refused for me to get in the car with him anymore. It turned into a fight where Dad spewed the most hateful words against Mom I had ever heard and admitted boldly to every way he hurt me in the past. Maybe he is more gentle and maybe he tries to repair things in his own way, but I shouldn't expect that to mean he is a gentle dad now.

This fight was the last time I was able to talk to him. He tried to get me to run errands for him, but I was not only too hurt by his words; I was sick. I couldn't eat. I couldn't stay awake. It was about three months before the diagnosis, and my energy dropped to an all-time low. I could get through a day, but I would curl up and sleep the moment I got home. I thought Dad had placed too much stress for me to bear, and I had to rest for a long time to recover. Months passed, and I didn't recover, but I still blamed the grief and the fight.

it's just pneumonia

This entire time, I still had the cough. My husband kept having issues of his own, though, so I would delay any care for myself for his sake. The most extreme was Bell's palsy, which seems an awful lot like a stroke in the moment. Finally, my husband told me to go to the doctor today. Chest x-rays revealed fluid in my lungs, and my doctor called me with urgency in her voice to go to the ER ASAP. Doctors, illness, medicine, (and cancer) is my ultimate phobia, so hearing an emotional doctor like that got my heart pumping. However, when I got to the ER, the doctor massively downplayed the fluid, insisting there was barely any. But he insisted my symptoms didn't line up and ran test after test. God bless him for being thorough because he could have sent me home with antibiotics, but he somehow found the masses on my liver and free-floating in my caking based on a chest x-ray and a hunch. It wasn't long until I was formally diagnosed with colon cancer in November 2023. They said I probably have had it for 2 years.

it's just cancer

My grandmother died from cancer. My mom recently died from cancer. My aunt very recently overcame cancer. It seems like every woman on my mom's side gets cancer, so what hope is there for me? When I was told I have masses, it might as well have been a formal diagnosis. Dad, being the most anxious and overbearing person on earth, has been consistently telling me I will get cancer next and to get tested immediately, so I actually even went to a cancer clinic in January. Ironically, the most they were willing to do was a genetic test and told me to come back for screening when I am middle-aged - when I very likely had cancer right then at the age of 28! Regardless, the paranoia was firmly planted in my head. Every time I had a weird pain in my belly, I got the dull fear it was cancer. It's not like I took the thought that seriously, but it certainly lingered in my mind. It was the like this meme that was floating around at the time, but...the pains actually were masses. Again, kinda ironic.

So I was primed and suddenly confronted with my capital phobia. I was a wreck, right? Strangely, no.

My pastor had recently given sermons on how Christians ought to rejoice in tribulations as opportunities for spiritual growth. I had read some James and 1 Peter, too, which only reinforce the glory of tribulation. I honestly scoffed that I could ever be that Christian, especially in the context of cancer. It seemed impossible to praise God and thank Him for the day if that ever happened. But of course I don't want to be out of alignment with Scripture, so I prayed for God to search my heart and change it. And He sure flipped my perspective upside-down.

I was calm when they found the masses. The Bible already explains why very obviously. Unlike the prolonged fool's mission of healing all my dad's problems, God has obviously placed me square in the middle of cancer for a reason, and if He puts you somewhere, He provides everything you need. He gives me the strength, He gives me the peace, and He gives me countless reasons to praise Him day-in and day-out. Obviously I cannot go through tribulations on my own. But if they are God-given and intended for spiritual growth, God will be and has been with me every step of the way. When you are with God, there is nothing to fear. Jesus' yoke is easy, and His burden is light.

So maybe these weird symptoms weren't from grief, pulled muscles, stress, or pneumonia, which would all be vastly preferable. But cancer isn't so different, knowing God holds the reins and will never leave my side. I really never thought I could say something like this, but

I have cancer - praise God!

ditching the Bible in a year reading plan

#christian #bible

I'm reading a chapter a day and digging deeper than I ever did on anyone else's pace.

experiencing the Bible in passing

Every church, every Christian friend group I've been in, they say you should read the entire Bible once every year. Tons of daily reading plan PDFs are floating around out there. As someone who deeply enjoys living under external, arbitrary structure and going through prebuilt curriculums, I took to this eagerly. I have used several, probably most often the one in the back of the ESV study Bible by Crossway.

This structure taught me a lot, gave me a lot of things to improve on, and was encouraging and beautiful for sure. But I never really dwelt on any particular verse or passage because of the pressure to complete the full circuit. Each chunk was a lot to read, and if I spent too long on any particular passage, the pace would get out of hand fast if any section was delayed to tomorrow.

If a patch of "begots" cropped up in the same section as more dramatic or poetic literature, the temptation to skim was strong. If anything was too difficult or too rich to understand in one pass, I wanted to move on to an easier text. After all, I had prayer and journaling to fit into my schedule as well. To some extent, I was more concerned about finishing than reading.

Despite all the concessions I've made over the years, I never completed a yearly plan within a year, not even once. I drowned under compounding missed Epistles and confusing Old Testament narratives, and I'd either start fresh with a new plan or take a break from Bible reading altogether. Even if I read the Bible every single day, the recurring topic of "Bible in a year" showered me with guilt because I could not read like them. If I ever could have succeeded, I'd imagine it would be akin to driving quickly through a museum and thinking, "that was cool," in passing.

my pace

I'm sure all those people around me receive the maximum blessing of the daily Bible reading plan, reading the full group of passages every single time with full comprehension. And I'm sure they become full of the Word as they do it. But I'm not sure I can. I am a slow reader, a lot of passages make no sense to me the first time, and something pops up in my life at some point during each year that makes it seriously hard to focus at all.

For a long time, I viewed this as a major shortcoming to force out of myself. Then, last year, as my mom's health sharply declined, I reassessed things in my life. As part of that, I took a topic that meant something to me, a hopeless situation, and the book that I felt spoke to that, Jeremiah, and told myself that if this one book takes an entire year, that's okay. I wanted to learn from Jeremiah's ministry.

I quickly found the best goal for myself is a chapter a day. It retains that delicious arbitrary structure, and it gives me plenty of time to read slowly, pray over verses, and bring in related Bible passages, commentaries, and sermons. I didn't enforce this pace, though. My goal was to understand the message, not complete the readings. I gave the daily chapter its best study and if I got nothing out of it, I would try reading it again the next day as a wiser girl. If the chapter was so rich or my life was too distracting, I might have had to split it up into multiple parts over multiple days. Jeremiah 32 took the entire week Mom was in the hospital. Under any other plan, I surely would have been in speedrunning mode or avoiding Scripture out of shame, but allowing myself to be slow and meditative allowed this Scripture to be one of the few things I remember from that time.

Doing this illuminated how every verse was included by the Spirit for a reason, even the "filler" and "introduction" verses. Even Jeremiah 1:1 alone are an interesting insight into his ministry.

The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in
Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,

Some think the priests in Anathoth may be connected to Abiathar whose estate was there (1 Kings 2:26). Abiathar is the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, son of Phinehas, son of Eli (1 Samuel 14:3). Eli's family was rejected from priesthood for disrespect and cursed to die young (1 Samuel 2:27-36), but one would be spared to weep his eyes out to grieve his heart (1 Samuel 2:33).

If Jeremiah is descended from him, that means God continued to set aside this remnant of Eli's family to weep over the priests as God cut them off.

These priests were just as despising of God if not worse, stealing, murdering, committing adultery, swearing falsely, making offerings to Baal, and going after other gods that they have not known, then coming and standing before Him in His house called by His name and saying, "We are delivered!" (Jeremiah 7:9-10). And Jeremiah grieved over His people, in the famous "weeping prophet" passage:

Oh that my head were waters,
and my eyes a fountain of tears,
that I might weep day and night
for the slain of the daughter of my people!

The Bible doesn't confirm Jeremiah's connection to Abiathar and outside sources aren't sure, but the mere allusion of an Anathoth priest sure brings to mind the kind of landscape the next 52 chapters will be set in.

is he or isn't he?

If Jeremiah is Eli's descendant, the curse would apply to him. His line would continue forever, he would be poor, and he would never live to be an old man. ESV includes "dying by the sword of men," but NASB and KJV merely indicate dying in the prime of life.

It's entirely possible Jeremiah's relatives are still around today. He did not sound like he had time for starting a family in the midst of his ministry, and Tertullian holds that he was stoned shortly after being taken to Egypt. So direct relatives are extremely unlikely, but relatives through a brother or something are certainly possible.

If he was very young when he began (Jeremiah 1:6) and had a ministry of about 40 years (Jeremiah 1:2-3), perhaps he died at age 50 or 60 by violence. To me, that is tragically young indeed. Since people consider prime to be anywhere from 18-50, I'm not precisely sure if 50-60 was "the flower of his age."

Then the last question is whether he was poor. I'm not sure if Anathoth priests tended to be wealthy or not, but Jeremiah 12:6 makes it sound like he lacked family support. The rest of Jeremiah doesn't really describe him as either wealthy nor someone who has to beg for bread, but the Bible doesn't give too much information about his day-to-day life. In Jeremiah 32, the LORD has him buy a field for 17 shekels of silver. That's nothing for the American land market, but I just don't know.

To me, his role as the weeping takes so perfectly after the word prophesied to Eli, but we just can't know.

fashion bible study - free and designed for small groups

#christian #bible #fashion

A topical Bible study observing how Scripture uses clothing and fashion to point us to God's plan for salvation and how to live like Jesus.

intro

Fashion may seem like a frivolous angle for gleaning spiritual truths, but the Holy Spirit is intentional when detailing clothing and personal style in Scripture. It is no coincidence clothing is nearly the first thing mentioned (Genesis 3:7) and appears again at the very end (Revelation 22:14). Regardless of your personal interest in fashion, I invite you to find a fresh perspective for studying your Bible.

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. - Genesis 3:7

"Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood." - Revelation 22:14-15

why fashion and not just clothes?

The scope of the study is broader than clothes and includes all elements of fashion. Clothes refers to the physical objects we wear. Fashion, however, is a social concept about how we present ourselves in different social situations and naturally encompasses clothing but also our hair, cosmetics, and even our posture. Clothing is used symbolically throughout the Bible, but including fashion is also important for understanding biblical figures. I also try to include different aspects of fashion to keep it interesting, including history of costume and textiles.

may I use this for my Bible study group?

Of course. I think it went okay with my group of adults (mid 20s to early 30s, half men and half women). I used the blog entries as teacher's notes for guiding the discussion. The handbook PDFs are complementary but not necessary, though I think they were a fun preview.

I currently only have 4 lessons but will update this page as I add more.

dressed in righteousness (fashion bible study - week 1)

#christian #bible #fashion

Clothes are right there at the beginning of the Bible as one of the first and most visceral symbols of salvation.

read: Genesis 3

The Fall is one of the most discussed Bible passages ever, but try to relate to Adam and Eve. Really hone in on the clothes here and how God is using them to illustrate His invisible qualities and our spiritual condition.

discuss

Who made the first clothes, and what were they?

[Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths in Genesis 3:7.]

The common fig Ficus Carica is a super ancient tree, and judging from how prevalent it is in both the Old and New Testament, it's deeply ingrained in Hebrew culture.

Fig leaves are big and beautiful, offering reasonable cover. I would love to try weaving the leaves themselves together, but tribal peoples usually use vines and braiding or basketweaving techniques to work leaves into clothing. The process is like the clover crowns you may have made as a child. Perhaps Adam and Eve did something similar. Whatever the construction method, it must have been meticulous and taken time.

What do you think might have happened between verses 6 and 8? Sewing gives space to talk and think.

[We don't know. We can relate through our personal experiences trying to fix problems and fearfully or guiltily hiding from God. I personally may have held back any philosophizing and emotional responses in favor of brute-forcing my first brainstormed solution as panickedly and secretively as possible, foolish or not.]

They were trying to hide their sin. They were not seeking God's power but acting on their own. Do you think they assessed all the trees of the Garden or did they take the leaves off the same tree they ate from?

fast-forward

The Lord God prophesies that the woman would be saved through her seed. Hearing this, Adam named his wife "Eve," a word derived from the word for "life," which points to their new hope. Rejoice that the Lord did not leave Adam and Eve in despair but immediately directed their attention to Jesus.

reread: Genesis 3:21

And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

discussion

What do you think that looked like?

[It's very possible the skins came from an animal that was killed and skinned before their eyes. It doesn't say what kind of skins. Maybe it was a clean animal.]

The Lord God demonstrated death. Paul said the wages of sin is death, and God literally shows it here. But this is not a senseless death meant to threaten--this is a sacrificial spilling of blood. Here is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. And God gave it to us to cloth us in His righteousness so He can no longer see our nakedness.

I think thats really serious in the context of a perfect paradise where nothing bad has ever happened, and what exactly was the sin that they were guilty of? Eating a fruit off the wrong tree? And they had an animal killed in front of them. Im not sure if they even knew what blood was or guts. Its just horrible. We say "the wages of sin is death" a lot, but we should never lose how very real and tragic that death is.

Why is sin that bad? What is sin?

[Sin is disobedience or rebellion against the holy standard that separates us from God. Adam and Eve have their own way of describing their condition: they were naked. Consider this account juxtaposed with Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Its not like we cant hide, or were ashamed of our bodies. Its like we are missing something, some of the glory, some of that righteousness.]

I think Adam and Eve learned really fast what God was teaching them by making these clothes, but as Christians, I think that we flatten a lot of God has to show us into easy phrases like “the blood of Jesus” to the point it gets kind of memetic. Why we talk so much about the blood and guilt offerings and the Cross?

Why does a sinner need blood?

[Let's read a few more passages to understand the history of blood in the Bible.]

read: Leviticus 16:15-22

Whenever you encounter the “annual sacrifice” in the Bible, this is the law that they are following. Samuels mother and father attended this day of atonement. Leviticus is full of instructions regarding all the kinds of sacrifices if you are interested in others, too, but I picked this one because Paul expounds upon it in Hebrews.

read: Hebrews 9:25-26

read: Hebrews 10:1-10

read: Romans 5:18

discuss

The function of a sacrifice is atonement for sin, and that atonement saves our lives. Atonement is even more than being saved from our sins. It is the basis for our relationship with God. Was anyone struck by anything else?

read: Hebrews 10:19-22

There is a flipside to this, too. Even though we can come boldly to the throne of our gracious God (Hebrews 4:16) and be assured Christ died for all sins, past, present, and future, we cant be flippant about sin because it disgraces His blood.

read: Hebrews 10:26-31

closing

This weeks truth: Clothes are a constant reminder of our shame for doubting Gods Word and attempting to exalt ourselves over Him. They were given to us as a token of Christs blood sacrifice and His plan of redemption.

Thought of the week: When you see your clothes, remember were clothed in righteousness, paid for by a blood price.

Challenge of the week: Be broken in spirit over our sin. The sensation of sin shocked Adam and Eve. The consequence of death wrapped around Adam and Eve. Its still wrapped around us today, so be vigilant against sin.

Adam and Eve used their clothes to hide, and Jacob used his as a disguise.
